My Darling Milly,

I am really sorry that I had to rush away so soon after our wedding, I would have given anything to have been able to stay with you and share our wedding night with you properly, but everything is so out of our control right now, but I will come home to you one day, I promise and we will begin to make up for all our lost time

I want you to know that when we took our vows I meant every word and I will always be faithful to them for you are my one true love. I knew that the moment we met and no-one could ever take your place in my heart. You looked so beautiful wearing your Mum's lovely wedding dress, you looked just like an angel and I couldn't wait for the line when they say "You may kiss the bride!!" and my darling, it was worth waiting for. That was the best kiss ever!

I will never forget how sad you looked when I was leaving, getting on that train was the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my entire life. Thank you for being so brave for me, if I had seen you crying I would never have been able to leave. It was unbearable watching you disappear into the distance like that, I felt like I'd left a very large part of myself behind, which of course I did because I am nothing without you Milly, without you I am incomplete

When you miss me most, I want you to do something for me. I want you to go to our little clearing in the woods. I like to picture you there lying on the grass, watching the birds and flying with them. This will always be our special place and though for now I cannot be there with you in person, I will always be there with you in spirit as this is the place where our love began

As for where I am just now, I am so glad that I have your beautiful face to focus on as it is a lovely distraction from this place which is just an ugly sea of mud, everywhere you look there is mud. My feet have not been dry since I got here, I never thought I would miss dry socks so much. I miss them a lot, but not as much as I miss you my beautiful wife

I have got to go now sweetheart, but I will write to you again as soon as I can and I hope and pray that it will not be too long until I am where I belong, back home with you

All my love always and forever,

Bertie xx
When I wrote my story "Dove On A Ledge" I mentioned that Milly had received a letter from Bertie and thought it would be a nice idea to let the reader know what was in that letter. I also had an idea to include the letter that Milly wrote to to Bertie, but I have decided not to as I don't like the idea that we get to see it when Bertie never did as he died before he received it. I have included a song here too. I knew It was perfect as when I was listening to it just after reading Bertie's letter again I had a huge lump in my throat and got quite tearful, so yes it's the perfect song! [link]

I have loved writing about Milly and Bertie so much that I would like to dedicate "Bertie's Letter" to :icontiger--photography: to thank you Terry for everything you have done for me. You have helped me so much I just wouldn't know where to start and don't forget that I will always be here for you too my friend forever
